Ellipsoidal head

Ellipsoidal head (also called elliptical head or elliptical dish end) is usually made with Carbon steel, stainless steel, austenitic and non ferritic metals that can be cold worked. The shape of this ellipsoidal head is more economical, because the height of the head is just a fraction of the diameter. The elliptical dish end radius varies between the major and minor axis usually with the ratio is 2:1. The elliptical tank head is the economical solution for medium pressure tanks due to the reduced metal thickness requirement.

Head (vessel) – Shapes The shape of the heads used can vary. A sphere is the ideal shape for a head, because the pressure in the vessel is divided equally across the surface of the head. This is also called an elliptical head. These heads have a dish with a fixed radius (r1), the size of which depends on the type of torispherical head.

Applications of Ellipsoidal Head

The ellipsoidal head has good mechanical properties better than the torispherical head. Due to the application of spinning manufacturing process in recent years, the fabrications of the larger diameter elliptical head is also can be realized. ASME elliptical dished heads are used in the construction of tanks for unfired pressure vessels, such as liquefied petroleum gas and air receivers.
